Saitama Prefectural Museum

Located in Tokiwa, Urawa-ku, Saitama prefecture. It is located in Kitauwawa Park. The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama opened amidst the lush greenery of Kita-Urawa Park on November 3, 1982. The book, as MOMAS (Museum of Modern Art, Saitama), is the first art museum created by architect Kurokawa Kisho. In addition to showcasing our collection of fine art from contemporary Western masters to contemporary Japanese artists, we also host special exhibitions dedicated to unique themes. By adding children’s programs and opportunities for citizens to showcase their work, MOMAS is full of exciting ways for you to get close to and enjoy the arts.

On May 10, 1957, in the era of the former city of Urawa, the Saitama Prefectural Art Museum, which will become the predecessor of the predecessor, became the first prefectural art museum on the other side of the lagoon (a stage in the success of the artist Uwala). Although it was used as the venue for the Saitama Prefectural Art Exhibition, the Saitama Kaikan Exhibition Room, which was newly built in 1966, played its part as it became small due to the increase in winning artworks.

The prefectural art museum, which lost its main role, is actually closed after it was used in the municipal building of the Urawa Municipal Museum and the administration building of the office building in Urawa, and it became the administrative office of Bishom Park, and then dismantled by rebuilding. That was done.

The Saitama Prefectural Museum of Contemporary Art (MOMAS), opened in 1982 in the lush Kitauwawa Park. From the collections of foreign masters such as Monet, Chagall, Picasso, to Japanese contemporary artists, we showcase beautiful works of art. In addition to organizing a special exhibition with unique themes from time to time, I also present many good design chairs that I can sit freely on.

In addition, we hold museum concerts, lecture meetings, seminars in which parents and children can participate, so that we can become better acquainted with art. You can also enjoy the museum slowly at the museum shop with art books and merchandise and a restaurant serving authentic Italian cuisine.

Purpose of the Saitama Prefectural Museum of Contemporary Art

However, as the exhibition hall in Saitama Kaikan became too small, the Saitama Prefectural Museum in Omiya Park collected modern works, so the voice of “a full-fledged art museum in Urawa” was raised, and Saitama Prefecture collected works “We decided to build a plan for a new museum, which will be built recently, and in present-day Saitama Prefecture (Kita Urawa Park), which was established on the site of Saitama University (formerly the former Urana High School), which moved November 3, 1982 (1969) It opened as a museum.

Urawa Kita Park is located next to the south side. Until then, we moved the contemporary art work that was kept in the Saitama Prefectural Museum in the hotel. The building was designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa. This was the first time Kurokawa created a museum within a museum.

It is the museum’s main policy to collect outstanding works both inside and out that have influenced Saitama’s contemporary art. For this reason, out of 3,000 works in the collection, about 2,000 items are occupied by artists from Saitama Prefecture. Works by Eiji and Tanauchi Ryohiro, known as Urawa artists, are also on display. You can sit in the numerous masterpieces in the hall, also known as the armchair museum.
